Three legendary food markets before the city wakes up
Barcelona has around forty municipal markets and they are still where a great many people actually shop. This morning takes the three most worth your time — the famous one, the beautiful one, and the one the neighbourhood kept for itself.
Go early. La Boqueria before 09:00 is a working market; by midday it is a crowd moving slowly past fruit cups. The difference between those two experiences is about two hours, and it is the single most useful thing to know about visiting it.

Local tip: Go before 10:00 to beat the crowds. Skip the front stalls and head deep inside for fair prices and where the locals shop.

Local tip: Breakfast at the counter — the fried eggs with baby squid (ous amb sípia) are the thing to order.

Local tip: The wavy technicolour roof is the photo. Quieter and more local than the Boqueria — grab a coffee at the bar inside.

Local tip: A beautifully restored iron market hall. On Sunday mornings the surrounding streets become a book and collectors' market.

Before you go
What time do Barcelona markets open?
Most from around 08:00, and the serious trade happens in the first two hours. Many stalls pack up by mid-afternoon, and almost everything closes Sunday.
Is La Boqueria worth visiting or is it a tourist trap?
Both, depending entirely on when you go and how far in you walk. Early morning and towards the back it is genuinely excellent. Midday at the front stalls is the tourist trap people warn about.
Can I eat at the markets?
Yes, and you should — the counter bars inside are among the best casual eating in the city. Expect to stand, expect a wait at the well-known ones, and expect it to be worth it.
