Chase golden hour across the city’s best lookouts
Barcelona sits in a bowl between hills and sea, which means the good sunset spots are all elevated and all on the wrong side of the city from each other. This plan picks four and orders them so you are climbing before the light goes, not during it.
Timing is everything and it moves through the year — sunset lands near 21:30 in midsummer and before 18:00 in December. Arrive an hour early whatever the season; the half hour after the sun goes is usually better than the sunset itself, and almost everyone leaves too soon.

Before you go
Which viewpoint is genuinely the best?
Bunkers del Carmel for the full 360-degree view, and it is free. The Montjuïc terraces are easier to reach and better if you want a drink in your hand rather than a hill climb.
How early should I arrive?
An hour before sunset. The popular spots fill up, the good positions go first, and the light in the hour beforehand is better for photographs than the moment itself.
Is it safe to come down after dark?
Generally yes, and you will not be alone — these spots stay busy well after sunset. Bring a light for the unlit paths down from the bunkers, and know how you are getting back before you go up.
