Gràcia was a separate town until 1897 and has never entirely accepted the annexation. The street plan gives it away — narrow, irregular, opening into a series of squares that function as the neighbourhood's living rooms rather than as monuments.

There is nothing here you have to see, which is the point. The day is built around sitting in squares, the market, and the vermouth hour, with enough walking between to feel like you have covered the neighbourhood rather than one street of it.

Before you go

How do I get to Gràcia?

Metro to Fontana or Joanic puts you in the middle of it. From the centre it is about a twenty-five minute walk up Passeig de Gràcia, which takes you past the modernista houses on the way.

What is the best time to go?

Late morning through the vermouth hour, which is roughly 12:00 to 14:00 on a weekend and the neighbourhood at its most itself. Evenings are good too; early mornings are dead.

Is anything closed on certain days?

Yes — the market closes Sunday and runs reduced hours Monday, and many independent shops and bars here close Sunday, Monday or both. A Saturday or a Thursday is the safe choice.
