Barcelona was a late arrival to specialty coffee and has made up the ground quickly. The scene here is small, concentrated and unusually good — a handful of roasters who know each other, spread across the Gothic Quarter, Gràcia and Poblenou.

Four cafés is more caffeine than most people want, so treat this as a route rather than a checklist: the walks between them pass through three quite different neighbourhoods, which is half the reason to do it this way.

Before you go

How do I order coffee in Barcelona?

In specialty places, English works and the menu will look familiar. In an ordinary bar, ask for a cortado — espresso cut with a little warm milk — which is what most locals drink and what these bars make best.

When do the cafés open?

Later than you might expect, generally from 09:00, and several close by mid-afternoon rather than running into the evening. Check the day too — independent cafés here often close Monday or Tuesday.

Is it walkable between all four?

The Gothic and Eixample stops are, comfortably. Poblenou is a metro hop rather than a walk — worth it if you want the neighbourhood, skippable if you are short on time.
