Montjuïc is where Barcelona puts the things it does not have room for down below — the national art collection, the Miró foundation, the Olympic stadiums, a castle, and a great deal of garden. It is a full day and it is almost entirely uphill.

Take the funicular up and walk down, not the other way around. The day ends at the fountain, which only runs on certain evenings and seasons — worth checking before you build the whole day around finishing there.

How do I get up Montjuïc?

The funicular from Paral·lel is included in a standard metro ticket and is the easiest option. The cable car from the port is more spectacular and costs extra. Walking up is possible but adds a hard half hour.

When does the Magic Fountain run?

On a seasonal schedule with reduced or suspended shows in winter, and it has been cut back in drought years. Always check the current timetable on the day rather than assuming.

Is the castle worth the entry?

For the views, yes — it looks over both the port and the city. The historical exhibits are modest; go for the ramparts and the walk around them rather than the interior.
