Is Barcelona safe for solo travellers?
Yes, with the standard caveat — pickpocketing is common and opportunistic, particularly on La Rambla, in the metro and on the beach. Violent crime against visitors is rare. Keep your phone out of your back pocket and you have handled most of the risk.
Will I feel awkward eating alone?
Less than almost anywhere. Counter seats at tapas bars are designed for exactly this, and eating standing up with a drink is completely normal at any hour.
Where do solo travellers meet people here?
Free walking tours, hostel bars, and the sunset spots on the hills, which turn into an informal social scene most evenings. A cooking class or a workshop is the reliable option if you want it to be less accidental.
